How Adoption Works
Browse Available Animals
Review our current animals and read their full profiles. Each profile includes personality, energy level, special needs, and foster notes from the people who know them best.
View Animals →Submit an Inquiry
Found an animal you connect with? Fill out a short inquiry form — just a few questions about your lifestyle and household. No commitment yet.
Start Inquiry →We Reach Out
Our team reviews every inquiry personally. We'll contact you within 48 hours to ask follow-up questions and answer yours. No automated pipelines here.
Meet & Greet
If it looks like a good match, we'll arrange a meet-and-greet — sometimes virtual, sometimes in person. You and the animal both get to decide.
Full Application
Once you're both comfortable, we'll send a full adoption application. This includes a home check and reference review — standard for responsible rescue.
Welcome Home
Adoption fee is due at pickup. We provide a transition packet, vet records, and ongoing support. You're never on your own after adoption.
The Right Fit.
For Everyone.
We don't have a perfect adopter checklist. We care about honest answers, realistic expectations, and commitment to the long term.
We want to know your lifestyle, your household, your experience with animals, and what you're looking for. There are no wrong answers — only wrong fits, and it's our job to help you find the right one.
FAQs
What is the adoption fee?
Fees vary by animal and cover spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip, and any medical treatment received while in our care. We'll quote exact fees during the inquiry process.
Do you adopt outside of Michigan?
We prioritize local adopters but can consider out-of-state placements for the right match. Contact us to discuss.
Can I adopt if I rent?
Yes, with proof that your landlord allows pets. We'll ask for this during the application process.
What if the adoption doesn't work out?
We require that all animals be returned to TWRDA — not surrendered elsewhere. We'll work with you to find a solution before that point.
Do you require a fenced yard?
It depends on the animal. Some of our dogs do better with outdoor space; others are fine in apartments. Each profile notes what the animal needs.
How long does the process take?
From inquiry to adoption, typically 1–3 weeks depending on the animal and your schedule. We don't rush placements — getting it right matters more than speed.
